Segra's Lumos Networks deploys 10G PON capabilities through technology vendors' ADTRAN Total Access 5000 fiber-optic broadband platform. Exchange operators in rural areas will take advantage of new features to better meet the demand for business services in rural Virginia.

Lumos is a long-time customer of ADTRAN and began providing Gigabit services to its customers in 2015. However, the growing demand for bandwidth from municipalities, higher education institutions, teaching hospitals, financial services companies, government and small business customers has prompted the current upgrade of fiber optic networks. Lumos expects to begin offering 10 Gbps broadband services this quarter. Initial markets for the service include Waynesboro, Clifton Forge, Covington and Botetourt, Virginia.

Diego Anderson, senior vice president and general manager of Lumos Networks, said: "For residential and small business customers, more powerful broadband services are needed to support the growth of the number of programs, and emerging technologies are accelerating network demand. Our partners with ADTRAN Relationships enable us to build reliable relationships with our customers while providing a unique range of services and support through a fiber infrastructure. The initial product will include 2, 4 and 8 Gbps layered symmetric speed curves for faster resolution. Solutions to meet changing customer needs. We also expect that based on the flexibility offered by the platform, the future will accelerate."

Lumos Networks was acquired by EQT Partners in 2017. Earlier this year, EQT brought the company alongside other service providers, Spirit Communications, to Segra.
